Guardian.
I always thought that Jimmy Grape was just another friend of mine, another person in my painfully average life, until of courage I discovered the truth. Jimmy was an unlucky fellow from what I had found, the amount of times I had yanked on his collar to pull him out of the way of a speeding car was ridiculous, the times a simple coincidence on my part that had saved him from a tragic accident uncountable. It was only after a special case that I realised I was something more, only after I died. During a small party at his house on a midsummer’s night, I took a shall break for a toilet trip, when I returned, my friend and his wife were nowhere to be seen. I saw armed burgers ransacking the house and dropped to a crouch, creeping up on my friends right under the burglar’s nose. Apparently, I was not as quiet as I thought I was. What happened next is a blur in my mind, a flurry of footsteps and shouts, and then a single boom that cracked and echoed throughout my house.
As I fell to my knees before Jimmy, his eyes widening in shock, I reached out with bloodied hands asking for no more than simple contact as I died. What I got was something entirely unexpected. As the ties of my fingers reached his open, quivering, palm; a radiant white light burst into the open room that blinded everyone with its evanescence. As the light began to recede, I felt revitalised, powerful. I floated inches off the ground, white bird-like wings protruding from my shoulders that bore golden angelic crests along the rim. Jimmy looked up at me in wonderment and awe. The burglars screeched ad bolted in fear, my appearance soft and inviting and yet wholly intimidating.
Since then, I’ve been doing the job I was created to do, what I always have been doing. I am a guardian.
